As promised at CESand then again at Google I/O, Lenovo is finally rolling out the first Google Assistant device with a display, delivering a fresh new spin on the smart home speaker. Smart displays are focused on being hubs or command centers for your smart home. It's a device you'll plant on one shelf or countertop and likely leave it there for its entire life. The Lenovo Smart Display is probably one of the most modern-looking pieces of smart tech you can buy right now. The device’s 8- or 10-inch screen is the main attention grabber, but the speaker grill on the left creates a unique asymmetrical shape. The Lenovo Smart Display is more than a smart speaker with a screen—it’s a whole new way to use Google Assistant.

And the microphones were mostly able to pick up my commands from across the room even with the music at full blast . In normal situations, the Smart Display understood my “Hey Google” prompt as well as my Home. Integrated Chromecast functionality is a major win for both the Lenovo Smart Display and the Google Home Hub.
It’s certainly better than the regular Google Home, I wouldn’t recommend it over a decent hi-fi setup if you’re really into your music. The Google Home Hub still packs a decent punch for its little size and I’d ballpark the speaker quality in the range of the regular Google Home. It will certainly suffice as a basic home speaker, but the Lenovo has a slight edge.
While it’s not a Google Home, it did 90 percent of the tasks I expected it to and provides rich visual information on top of the queries and commands that I give it. I find this incredibly valuable, and a valid reason to consider replacing my collection of Google Homes and Assistant speakers — or at least some of them. This distinction between the two products is one Google can either minimize or continue expanding. Considering Smart Displays are seen by many as a Google Homewith a screen, I think it’s wise to bring the two under one roof and avoid further confusion.

If you like making video calls, smart displays are a good way to do so without sacrificing your phone or laptop battery. Thanks to the built-in Google Assistant, the Nest Hub responds to all of the same voice command options as the Google Home Mini smart speaker. The Google smart display touchscreen is a little small at 7 inches, but the adaptive brightness makes pictures look particularly great. Other than the size of the screen and body of the Smart Displays, the only real difference between the 8-inch and 10-inch models is the material on the back of the device.
